AMTC was created in 1975 at HMAS Albatross naval base by a group of service personnel. The group was then named Albatross Gilbert and Sullivan Society and the first show was The Pirates of Penzance performed on the base at the Gymnasium.
The group has grown and diversified in the intervening years losing most of its Navy ties. Civilian cast gradually became the majority and performances moved into town and eventually into the School of Arts. The Company was incorporated as a not for profit organisation and renamed Albatross Musical Theatre Company in 1995.
The opening of the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre in 2008 brought significant change to AMTC. We were quick to move performances there and take advantage of the large stage and professional facilities. From then on every aspect of AMTC’s operation was on a different scale and there was the daunting prospect of using the same venue as regular touring professional acts and the occasional big name act.
We are now delighted to be have grown as a performance group and are attracting sufficient audience to be included as part of the SEC Live Season.
AMTC has always valued its place in the community. We have an annual donation to charities, emergency relief appeals and we support the Shoalhaven Eisteddfod. At various times we have dedicated shows to raise money for a charitable cause. We provide scholarships to young people and provide opportunity for students to work backstage to support their coursework. We also participate in community events such as the River Festival.
We carefully select our shows both for their entertainment value and audience appeal. And we alos consider the opportunities they provide to a variety of performers and theatre people from the young to old and from semi-professional to newcomers.
The history of AMTC is the history of its people. It includes those singers, actors, musicians, production and creative folk who have staged the shows with a level of enthusiasm and provided a quality experience that has engaged audiences.
The AMTC people have changed over the years but somehow something remains that allows AMTC to continue to attract the best performers, musicians and theatre folk to create its shows.
